SEASIDE, Calif. – Entering the day a stroke back for the team lead at the 2018-19 CCAA Men’s Golf Championships, Cal State Monterey Bay played to both team and individual titles in its own backyard, taking control in the final round from Bayonet and Black Horse.

The Otters played even-par golf on a beautiful day by the Pacific to claim a five stroke victory in the team standings. Cal State Monterey was paced by the impressive final round charge up the leaderboard by senior Matt Hedges, who claimed his first collegiate golf title just before his career for the Otters reaches its swan song. The Ashland, Ore., native carded a 4-under 68 to leapfrog two men to earn the title. He outlasted last year’s medalist Elis Svard by two shots, outpacing the runner-up from Sodertalje, Sweden down the stretch.

With the win, the Otters nabbed their fourth CCAA team championship, and their first since 2013. Hedges gives Cal State Monterey Bay back-to-back individual winners, and their seventh men in the last 11 years to claim the crown.

The day’s low team score belonged the Sonoma State, who jumped to second in the standings after playing the course to a total tally of 2-under 286. Yet again, the Seawolves recorded a hole in one on the course, this time coming at the par-3 15th hole off the club of Ian Hofmann. Coincidentally, though on a different hole, Hofmann’s yardage to the pin and club selection mirrored that of yesterday’s ace from teammate Spencer Clapp.

Day 1 leaders, Cal State East Bay slipped to third overall, followed by last year’s victors Chico State, and UC San Diego who finished in a tie for fourth.

Sonoma State’s Devin Gregg closed the day in third place individually, joining Hedges and Svard as the only men to close the championships with an under-par score. UC San Diego’s Justin Woo and Joey Herrera of Cal State East Bay rounded out the top 5 finishers, who were named CCAA All-Tournament Team selections.

The championship-winning Otters earned the CCAA’s automatic bid into the West/South Central Regional field, with competition slated to take place May 9-11 at The Ledges GC in St. George, Utah, and hosted by Dixie State. The rest of the league’s teams await the committee’s selection decisions to see whose postseason will continue in Utah, which will be announced this Friday.

In the final regional rankings of the season released prior to the CCAA Championships, Chico State was first in the West with Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay holding the 3-4-5 positions. Stanislaus State landed in seventh with UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos rounding out the Top 10.
