Birdie-Laden Card for Medalist Will Barnett Leads to Golfer of the Week

Peaking at the right time of year with his second individual event win in the last three tries, Cal State East Bay’s Will Barnett has earned CCAA Golfer of the Week for March 13-19.

Barnett played to the top of the leaderboard to secure individual medalist honors at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park South Course in Alameda.

Barnett was brilliant on the first day of the tournament, making 10 birdies in his first round and flirting with the course record before finishing with a 65 (-7), the lowest round by a Cal State East Bay player this season. The Melbourne, Australia, native followed that up with a 68 (-4) Monday afternoon to take a seven-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round. The senior finished the week with a career-best total of 206 (-10) and held off a late charge by Chico State's Kelley Sullivan to win by three strokes.

All told, Barnett rolled 20 birdies during the competition and the Pioneers carded 58 red numbers to top the field. As a team, the Pioneers landed in third overall after falling from the top spot in the final round of play, behind CCAA nationally-ranked competitors No. 13 Sonoma State and No. 10 Chico State.

Cal State East Bay takes to the course next at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational April 1-2 at the Turlock Golf and Country Club.
