Sumilong Leads Toros En Route to First CCAA Weekly Award

Janelle Sumilong paced Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 2-1 record to round out the 2019 calendar year and earned her first CCAA Player of the Week distinction for Dec. 16-22.
 
The junior guard out of Hanford who spent the 2018-19 season at College of the Sequoias after beginning her college career at Division I Nevada, averaged 14.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals over three starts during the Toros’ busy week.
 
In Thursday’s 75-58 home triumph over area rival Cal State LA, Sumilong went for a season-high 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from long range, and 5-of-7 from the stripe. She added two boards, one assist and a steal.
 
On the road up at Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon, Sumilong produced a team-best 18 points to aid in another comfortable 81-62 decision. She made 8-of-18 from the floor while connecting on two of her six three-point attempts. Sumilong collected a game- and season-high five steals, to go along with one rebound and two assists over the full 40 minutes.
 
The back-to-back wins followed an 85-63 home loss on Tuesday night to 22nd-ranked reigning CCAA regular-season and tournament champion UC San Diego in which Sumilong had seven points, a season-best seven rebounds and two assists.
 
Sumilong is the Toros’ first CCAA weekly award winner since current senior teammate Ahlisha Henderson last Jan. 22.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills (6-7, 3-4 CCAA), now in ninth place, begins the new year at home inside the Torodome in Carson against Chico State on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. on the CCAA Network.
