Cal State San Bernardino senior guard Jeremy Smith totaled 48 points over a pair of home victories and picked up a CCAA Player of the Week selection for Dec. 16-22.
The Temecula product and first-year transfer out of California Baptist who started 24 games for the Division I Lancers located in Riverside a season ago, averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals last week.
In Thursday night’s 82-79 decision over Stanislaus State, Smith got into a duel with Vida Faniel, and led his team to a big win despite falling a narrow two points shy of the Warrior standout with his season-high-tying 30 points. Smith shot 9-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-5 from long range, and also 9-of-12 from the line. He added five assists, four boards and a steal in 39 minutes. Smith scored the Coyotes’ final three points from the stripe before Stanislaus State missed a triple at the buzzer.
Saturday during an 89-73 defeat of Cal State San Marcos, Smith provided 18 more points, eight assists, four rebounds and another steal. He went 5-for-9 and made four three-pointers to equal his season best on seven tries, and all four free throws.
Smith is the second Coyote to earn the league’s weekly award thus far in the 2019-20 campaign, following Daytone Jennings on Dec. 3. He is now up to third in the conference with his 18.2 scoring average, and second at 5.3 assists per game.
A winner of three straight in all, Cal State San Bernardino is 9-3 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play. The Coyotes are tied for fourth in the current league standings with Cal Poly Pomona. They will head back up to the Bay Area for the second time already this season to tip off 2020, playing at San Francisco State on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7:30 p.m., and Sonoma State on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 3 p.m., both on the CCAA Network.
Cal State San Bernardino in fact has taken six of its last seven, the lone blemish a 70-69 loss at contender Cal State East Bay on Dec. 12 in which the Coyotes surrendered the last six points of the contest over the final minute and a half.
