MONMOUTH, Ore. – It was a successful morning at Ash Creek Preserve for the CCAA, as Chico State and Cal State East Bay guaranteed their spot in the final cross country race of the 2019 season.
Chico State raced to the top of the pack at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Regionals to earn a place in the national championships field, and Cal State East Bay’s third place finish guarantees the Pioneers a berth as well.
For the Wildcats, the victorious regional effort is their eighth West Region title, and the first since 2016. The win ensures Chico State’s entry into the national championships for the 20th consecutive season, every year of this century. For the Pioneers, the team bid to compete on the national stage is the first in program history.
Chico State outpointed closest competitor Northwest Nazarene 75 to 134, with Cal State East Bay closing with 142 points to edge Alaska Anchorage by four points to earn the automatic berth.
The 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships will be contested Saturday, Nov. 23 at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, as the state of California hosts the championships for the first time since 2005.
Individually, the contingent of conference runners was paced by the CCAA’s individual cross country champion, freshman Destiny Everett of Chico State. The Lincoln native raced to fifth overall, crossing the line in 20:56.2. She was joined by the Wildcats’ four other point-scorers on the day in earning All-West Region honors as Talia Swangler took ninth, Gracie Dupuis finished 17th, Nora Pizzella landed in 20th and Desirae Jones collected 24th individually.
For the Pioneers, sophomore Angie Ronquillo led the way taking 10th individually after turning in a time of 21:03.6, with teammates Claire Fisher (14th) and Amanda Navarro (18th) also turning in all-region performances.
Beyond the women automatically racing in two week’s time, the CCAA enjoyed many other successes on the course. Cal Poly Pomona took sixth as a team, paced by sophomore Luz Garcia’s 13th place finish along with a 22nd-place performance for Araseli Servin. Cal State San Marcos earned eighth as Marina McDonough picked up all-region acclaim after crossing in 19th. Stanislaus State’s Nancy Juarez finished seventh individually to lead the Warriors to ninth in the team standings. UC San Diego’s Sam Rocke placed 15th as the Tritons finished 11th as a team
All told, an impressive 13 of the 25 All-West Region performers hail from the CCAA.
Now, the Wildcats and Pioneers rest easy as other CCAA teams and individuals wait to see if they are selected as at-large competitors into the national meet, as 10 additional teams and at least 24 individuals will be picked to compete in Sacramento. At-Large selections into the championships field will be announced Monday.
