Jacob Chong’s first collegiate hat trick helped kick off a huge six-point week for Chico State, and earned the redshirt freshman striker his first CCAA Player of the Week award for Oct. 28-Nov. 3.

A native of Encinitas in San Diego County, Chong added an assist to his three goals in the Wildcats’ 6-0 victory at Stanislaus State on Wednesday night. He tallied the opener, what proved to be his third winner, with a leaping header just 7:22 into the contest. Chong doubled the WIldcats’ advantage a mere 38 seconds later with another header, and put the finishing touches on his feat in the 55th minute. His assist came on the fourth score of the match by Anthony Kaskie in the 48th.

Chong is the 18th student-athlete in program history to produce a hat trick, and the first since Andrew McCombs on Oct. 20, 2017. It was the eighth hat trick in the CCAA this season, with Cal Poly Pomona’s Jimmie Villalobos adding his second in as many weeks on Friday. For Chong, it was also a first career multiple-goal effort.

Chong was credited with two shots, one of them on target, in Sunday’s 1-0 home win against rival Sonoma State. He has team bests of seven scores and 16 total points.

Chico State (10-4, 6-4, 1.8 points per match) has responded to a three-game losing stretch with a three-match win streak to resurrect its postseason hopes. The Wildcats have not, however, locked up a 2019 CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament berth as of yet. They are at home again in this final week of the regular season and looking to do just that, hosting Cal State East Bay on Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day Saturday.
