Julia Macabuhay Sizzles to Pick Up First Career CCAA Player of the Week Award

Sophomore guard Julia Macabuhay of No. 6 UC San Diego continued her strong start to the season to garner her first career CCAA Player of the Week selection for Nov. 11-17.
The Los Angeles native earned Most Valuable Player honors at the West Region Crossover Classic in Azusa. Macabuhay averaged 22.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds coming off the bench during a pair of strong wins against perennial regional contenders from the GNAC in Western Washington and Seattle Pacific.
Macabuhay poured in a career-high 25 points Friday night in a 76-68 victory over Western Washington. Her previous collegiate best was 19 points last Dec. 29, which she matched in the Tritons’ season opener at home against Simon Fraser on Nov. 10, in her first action since Jan. 5. Macabuhay connected on 11 of her 17 attempts from the floor, and added five rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot in just 24:17.
In Saturday’s 79-67 decision against SPU, Macabuhay again had game highs of 20 points and five assists, to go with two boards. She produced seven points and an assist on a three-point play during a 13-0 third-quarter run that turned a 44-40 deficit into a 53-44 lead. Macabuhay missed a single shot in seven tries, that being one of three attempts from long range, and was true on six of her eight free throws.
For the week, Macabuhay shot 17-of-24 (.708) from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and hit seven of her 10 free throws. She is averaging a team-leading 21.3 points per game in the early going, through three reserve appearances, with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.1 (21-10).
UC San Diego, off to a 3-0 start, next opens CCAA play at home this Thursday against crosstown rival Cal State San Marcos. Tip-off inside RIMAC Arena is set for 5:30 p.m. All of the Tritons’ home contests this season can be viewed for free online on ESPN3.
