Cal Poly Pomona senior midfielder Jimmie Villalobos tallied two goals and an assist as the Broncos navigated an unbeaten road weekend, and earned CCAA Player of the Week selection for Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
The native of Oasis scored the 43rd-minute opener during a 2-0 victory Friday night at rival UC San Diego. He then set up the 75th-minute clincher, latching onto fellow senior central midfielder Cyro Oliveira’s deep pass, dribbling into the penalty area on the left side and rolling a square, left-footed pass toward the far post for sophomore teammate Gabriel Castillo to slam home from close range.
Villalobos scored the unassisted 75th-minute equalizer Sunday in what turned out to be a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Cal State San Marcos. A unanimous All-West Region Second Team honoree a season ago, he played all 110 minutes, gaining credit for a team-high six shot attempts, including three in the first overtime period.
Villalobos has now found the back of the net in six consecutive matches for the resurgent, two-time defending West Region champion Broncos, who have gone 3-0-1 since an 0-3-1 start to their first campaign under new head coach Matt O’Sullivan.
With this past weekend’s performance, Villalobos has increased his team-leading season goal total to eight, second-best among all CCAA student-athletes behind Cal State Monterey Bay forward and fellow senior Walmer Martinez’s nine.
This marks Villalobos’ second career CCAA Player of the Week award (Sept. 26, 2017).
Cal Poly Pomona wraps up this season-long four-game road stretch up north this weekend, at Chico State on Friday night and Stanislaus State on Sunday.
