Cal State Monterey Bay’s Elis Svard captured a wire-to-wire win to earn CCAA Golfer of the Week for Oct. 23-30.
The senior from Sodertalje, Sweden is no stranger to CCAA distinction, as this marks Svard’s second weekly award of the 2019-20 season, and seventh of his career as an Otter.
After holding a one-stroke lead after the first round at the Dennis Rose Invitational at the Kings Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii, Svard followed it up on Tuesday with an impressive 6-under 66 to widen the gap. He rounded out the three-day event with a tidy 2-under 70 to outpace his closest competitor, Blake Bourelle of Sonoma State, by five strokes.
Svard finished the event leading all competitors in scoring average on both par 4s (3.97) and par 5s (4.42), a three-way tie for the top at the longer distance. As a team, the Otters finished in a two-way tie in the standings with UC San Diego, 14 strokes back from the victors from Sonoma State. Five CCAA squads were in the field of 16 teams, as Stanislaus State (8th) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (t11th) also competed and six individuals closed the event in the top 10.
This marks the conclusion of the fall slate for the Otters, and in fact all nine CCAA men’s golf teams, who will return to the course after a break for winter. Cal State Monterey is next in action at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino in Riverside, on Feb. 17-18, 2020.
