Chico State senior Chris Colla picked up his first collegiate tournament win, and added CCAA Golfer of the Week to his awards for the week of Oct. 9-15.
Hailing from Fond du Lac, Wisc., Colla leapt to the top of the leaderboard at the Sierra Central Wildcat Classic midway through the first round and never looked back. Firing off an opening round 67, Colla followed it up with two more under-par rounds for a two day tally of 8-under, 208. He eased to a three-stroke victory over Sonoma State’s Blake Bourelle, who led the Seawolves to the team victory over the Wildcats in the 14-team field at Butte Creek CC.
Colla finished with a tournament-best 16 birdies, including a pivotal stretch started by back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to gain separation and claim medalist honors.
Chico State will wrap up the fall portion of its 2019–20 campaign next Monday and Tuesday at the Otter Invitational in Seaside as seven CCAA squads hit the course at Bayonet and Black Horse.
