Jones Named CCAA Player of the Week After Successful Road Weekend Oct 1, 2019 Junior forward Brett Jones notched both game-winning goals to lead UC San Diego to a critical six-point weekend in its first road foray of 2019, coming away with CCAA Player of the Week recognition for Sept. 23-29. Jones tallied the lone goal of Friday night’s overtime triumph at Cal State East Bay, scoring unassisted into the bottom left corner at the 95:12 mark. He then headed in the 51st-minute opener during Sunday’s 2-0 triumph at previously-undefeated Cal State Monterey Bay, with strike partner and fellow junior Jonathan Sabouri setting him up before doubling the Triton advantage a mere 14 seconds later. The Mission Viejo native is now a two-time conference weekly honoree for his college days. Jones totaled five shots on the weekend, with both attempts on goal going for scores. He leads the team with five goals, already a single-season career high, three game-winners and 10 total points. In fact, Jones has found the back of the net in five of the six contests he has appeared in thus far for his third collegiate campaign. Over the two shutout victories, the Triton defense allowed just five shots, with only three on frame. UC San Diego, which opened the season with a six-game home stand ahead of this past week’s road trip, begins another seven-match home stretch with a huge pair this weekend against southern rivals Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Friday night’s primetime showdown with the Broncos has a 7 p.m. kickoff in La Jolla. The two sides have accounted for the last four West Region championships.
