Duarte, Costello Dazzle to Earn Selection for CCAA Weekly Awards May 1, 2018 SAN RAMON, Calif. — Dalton Duarte slugged his way to the Toros’ first series sweep while Casey Costello was nearly perfect from the bump for Chico State as the pair was selected for California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 23-29. CCAA Baseball Player of the Week Dalton Duarte had a hot bat all throughout the series with Stanislaus State, going deep twice in as many games to help the Toros to their first series sweep of the season. In the season opener, the junior from Newbury Park blasted two home runs, his third multi-homer game of the year. Duarte finished the weekend hitting .588 with a 1.588 slugging percentage and 12 RBI. Duarte was a key figure to the each of the four Toros’ victories, either knocking in the winning run or adding on to the lead. Has played 37 games this season, batting .294 with 14 home runs, 9 doubles and 35 RBI. The Toros close the regular season against Cal Poly Pomona. Thursday and Friday the series is in Pomona, with Cal State Dominguez Hills hosting a doubleheader on Saturday from Carson. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Costello went 6.2 innings without allowing a hit, a walk or a hit by pitch. Down to their last out in the seven-inning contest, the Broncos finally found a hit when Brennan McKenzie sent a pitch to an open patch of grass in right-center field for a single. Still working with a 1-0 lead, Costello then had to escape a jam after a second Bronco reached on an error to third base. But the senior from La Quinta got the final out of the game on a swinging strikeout on his 82nd pitch. The reigning CCAA and West Region Pitcher of the Year finished the seven-inning complete game with eight strikeouts without a walk and just the one hit, helping Chico State clinch a CCAA Tournament berth in the process. The Wildcats have two games remaining in the regular season, hosting Stanislaus State on Friday making up a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Feb. 18.
