SAN RAMON, Calif. – After playing his way to the 2018 CCAA Individual Championship, Cal State Monterey Bay sophomore Elis Svard headlines the 2018 men’s golf all-conference selections, announced today by the league office.
Last year’s Freshman of the Year, Svard continued his stellar play in his second collegiate season, playing his way to the 2018 CCAA Individual Championship. Hailing from Sodertalje, Sweden, Svard was the unanimous pick amongst the coaches, receiving the highest possible vote tally. Along with the conference championship crown, Svard earned medalist honors at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational in February and landed in the individual Top 10 at seven events.
He is joined on the first team by 2017 Newcomer of the Year Edward Hackett, as the Otter duo helped the team to a runner-up finish at the CCAA Championships. Cal State Monterey Bay will play as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAA regional.
Sonoma State’s Dexter Simonds, a transfer to the Seawolves from Bellevue College, has been tapped as the CCAA’s Newcomer of the Year and also landed on the All-CCAA squad. Simonds paced the Sonoma State team all season with a 73.14 adjusted stroke average, helping the program to its 12th NCAA regional appearance in the last 13 years.
Freshman of the Year honors went to Stanislaus State’s Michael Jura. The Fresno native tied for 22nd at the recent CCAA Championships and posted a third-place finish at the UCSD SoCal Intercollegiate in March, tallying his best 54 hole stretch of golf with a 1-under, 215. Jura’s teammate Jeff Yamaguchi earned a first-team all-conference nod, and the Clovis native was selected for regional play as an individual.
Coach of the Year honors belong to first-time recipient Nick Green. In his second season at the helm of the men’s golf program, the Chico State alumnus is in his 15th year with Wildcats’ golf, either as a player or coach. This year, Green helped the Wildcats to the CCAA team title, the top seed in the NCAA West Regional and a No. 14 Golfstat ranking. A trio of Wildcats, 2017 individual champion and 2018 runner-up Kelley Sullivan, Colby Dean and Josh McCollum, landed on the All-CCAA first team with three more Chico State men earning honorable mention status.
Also picking up conference honors were sophomore Adam Navigato of UC San Diego, Cal State San Marcos senior Chris Tuulik and Cody Hall of Cal State San Bernardino. Hall a junior from Murrieta will join Yamaguchi in the regional field, playing as one of four individuals selected from the West.
Three men – Dean, Sullivan and Svard – repeat on the All-CCAA first team from a year ago, and eight of the 10-member team will compete at the
upcoming NCAA West/South Central Regional from May 7-9 in Amarillo, Texas.
