Automatic Qualifying Marks Net Burkhart and Massengale Weekly Honors

SAN RAMON, Calif. — After two NCAA automatic qualifying performances, Chico State’s Alex Burkhart and Courtney Massengale of San Francisco State have been tabbed as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track and Field Athletes of the Week for April 16-24.
 
CCAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Alex Burkhart set a CCAA record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays en route to her NCAA qualifying time. The Chico State senior from Rancho Cucamonga raced to a mark of 10:09.79 in the steeplechase en route to an NCAA automatic qualifying time at the Mt. SAC Relays.She had already booked her return to the NCAA Championships in March, but was even faster on Friday, besting her own personal record (10:14.55) and posting the top time in Wildcat program history. Burkhard finished ninth among the field of Division I, elite club athletes and international participants.

CCAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
After an automatic NCAA qualifying discus throw, Courtney Massengale has been named CCAA Field Athlete of the Week. The award marks her second consecutive for the junior from Yuba City.

Taking 10th in the field of 89 athletes at the Beach Invitational, Massengale finished with a throw of 53.63 meters in the event. Her hurl is good for fourth-best in the nation this season and sets a new San Francisco State program record. In javelin, she notched a provisional qualifying mark at 41.51 m to cap the weekend.
