Maddex, Challacombe Race to CCAA Track and Field Weekly Honors

SAN RAMON, Calif. — Strong performances on the track for Cal State LA’s Ashlea Maddex and a second-place heptathlon finish for UC San Diego’s Chelsea Challacombe were highlights at the Aztec Invitational earning the duo California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track and Field Athlete of the Week for March 19-25.
 
CCAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Ashlea Maddex, a sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, set a new season’s best in the 100 meter hurdles, recording a new NCAA Division II No. 1 time in the nation. Finishing in 13.51 to take second in the invitational race at the 40th Annual Aztec Invitational, Maddex was only outpaced by Oregon’s Alaysha Johnson (13.48).

Maddex also competed in the 4x100 relay where the team took second with a time of 47.52, and the 4x400 as the Golden Eagles ran a season-best 3:56.05 to finish first.

CCAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
UC San Diego sophomore Chelsea Challacombe took second in the heptathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4699 points at the 40th Annual Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. Her final point total moves her into third all-time at UC San Diego in the event, behind only UCSD greats Stephanie LeFever (5385), the 2011 national runner-up, and Linda Rainwater (5333), the 2008 national champion.

Challacombe placed in the top three in five of the seven events, finishing second in the high jump (season-best 5'5") and third in the 100-meter hurdles (personal-record 15.09), shot put (34'9.5"), long jump (17'4") and 800 meters (2:25.98). The Los Alamos, NM native sat in third after the first four events on Thursday.
