POMONA, Calif. – The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) individual award winners and All-CCAA squads have been announced on the eve of the 2017-18 CCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, taking place this weekend at Kellogg Arena the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.

Five programs – Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Cal State San Marcos – each placed two men on the All-CCAA first team. Stanislaus State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State LA each enjoy at least one man on the second-team selections, with the Warriors and Toros placing a pair on the CCAA’s second team.

The season’s Player of the Year honors go to Cal State San Marcos senior Ethan Alvano. The Corona native was honored as Newcomer of the Year a season ago, and continued to leave a mark on the league in his final year on the hardwood. Alvano averaged CCAA-bests of 20.5 points, 5.9 assists and 2.6 steals per game, helping his team to the No. 4 seed in the CCAA Championship before bowing out in a double-overtime loss to San Francisco State. Alvano is joined on the All-CCAA first team by teammate Josh Spiers.

The duo from Cal State San Marcos are joined on the All-CCAA first team by Christian Bayne and Christian Oshita of UC San Diego, who outlasted Stanislaus State in a double-overtime quarterfinal game to reach the semifinal round. Chico State’s first-team All-CCAA pair of Jalen McFerrin and Isaiah Ellis will take on the Tritons in the semifinals.

Four first-team selections will also take the court in the other semifinal matchup as Cal Poly Pomona’s William Christmas and Jordan Ogundiran are set to square off against Brantley Bynum and Warren Jackson of San Francisco State. Last season’s Freshman of the Year, Christmas is the lone underclassmen on the first team.

Stanislaus State’s Vida Faniel, a junior from Palmdale, took home Newcomer of the Year accolades. After joining the Warriors from Ventura College, Faniel became a key cog in the offense contributing 12.4 points per game on 47.6 percent shooting from the floor. He was eye-poppingly consistent from the free throw line, sinking 78-of-83 (94.0 percent) of his attempts, good for third in NCAA Division II.

Two Broncos round out the individual awards, with Phoenix Shackelford nabbing Freshman of the Year and Greg Kamansky picking up Coach of the Year accolades for the fifth time in his career. Shackelford grew into a solid sixth man role averaging 8.4 points a night while connecting on a team-best 47.5 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Kamansky’s squads have been known by their gritty defense, and this year is no exception with the Broncos rating in the Top 3 nationally in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense en route to the CCAA regular-season title.
