Alex Eliopulos, Joe Ryan Earn Weekly Baseball Honors Feb 27, 2018 SAN RAMON, Calif. — Impressive showings by upperclassmen Alex Eliopulos of UC San Diego and Stanislaus State’s Joe Ryan led their squads to victory over the weekend. The pair has been awarded weekly honors as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 20-26, respectively. CCAA Baseball Player of the Week Eliopulos, a redshirt junior third baseman, led No. 7 UC San Diego to its first CCAA series victory of 2018, 3-1 over Cal State Dominguez Hills. He hit .600 (9-15) and slugged 1.467, with a .714 on-base percentage, four home runs, one double, six runs scored and eight driven in against the Toros. Eliopulos was a perfect 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three runs and four RBI in Friday's 14-3 home rout, exiting the game after just five innings. He was then 3-for-5 with two home runs, a walk, two runs and three RBI to kick off Saturday’s twin bill with a 10-7 win. Eliopulos leads the CCAA in slugging (.870), runs (14-tied), hits (23), RBI (23), home runs (7) and at-bats (54). Next, the Tritons take on Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game home and home series. UC San Diego plays host duties Thursday and Friday night with the Broncos hosting a Saturday doubleheader. The senior staff ace baffled San Francisco State’s batters on Friday as he out-dueled West Region pitcher of the Week Matthew Hernandez to lead the Warriors to a 2-0 win. Ryan - and closer Chase Wheatcroft - combined for the two-hit shutout. Ryan struck out 10 batters in eight innings and gave up just two singles. He retired the first 16 Gators he faced and only allowed one baserunner to reach second. In four starts, Ryan has worked 27 innings and struck out 34 and holds a 0.67 earned run average on the season. Next up, the Warriors host Sonoma State for four this weekend.
