Tyler Place, Matthew Hernandez Named CCAA Player & Pitcher of the Week

SAN RAMON, Calif. — A dominant road performance for San Francisco State pitcher Matthew Hernandez and an offensive outburst at home for Tyler Place of Cal State San Marcos earned both men California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 12-19, respectively.
 
CCAA Baseball Player of the Week
Place, a senior shortstop from Fullerton, powered the San Marcos offense to a three-game sweep in their home-opening series against Concordia Portland. Place tallied seven hits, six runs and three RBI over the weekend, hitting .700 in the series.

In the home-opener, Place slugged two home runs and went 3-for-3 as the Cougars recorded a 6-1 victory to set the tone for the weekend. All told, Cal State San Marcos recorded a 21-6 scoring advantage in the three contests.

Next, the Cougars play a four-game split with Cal Poly Pomona this weekend, traveling to take on the Broncos Friday and Saturday and hosting a Sunday double-header.

CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Hernandez, a senior from Fort Bragg, was dominant in the best outing of his college career, to date. He struck out a career-high 12 batters in the Gators' CCAA opener, a 4-1 win at No. 7 UC San Diego. He scattered six hits with one unearned run in six innings of work for his first win of the season.

The Gators host Stanislaus State this weekend with Friday’s first pitch from Maloney Field slated for 2 p.m.
