SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Some things happen like clockwork, including tonight’s “fall back” to represent the end of daylight saving time. Another, sure thing every year – or at least for the past 17 – has been the Chico State men’s cross country team taking the team title at the CCAA Cross Country Championships.

Saturday, the Wildcats raced to the victory with 19 point, and all 10 men in the field earning All-CCAA honors. Senior Eddie King nabbed his first career individual victory rounding the 8,000 meter course in 24:09.8. His mark was good for the fastest victorious 8K effort since Dan Reed’s 23:59 in 1996 for UC Riverside.

The 17th consecutive title extends the streak as the most repeat conference championships by any team competing in any CCAA sport, regardless of gender. Along with King’s performance, Chico State’s Jason Intravaia took third, redshirt freshman Jack Emanual rounded the course in fourth to pick up Newcomer of the Year honors, and Wyatt Baxter raced to sixth to round out the scoring.

Obviously the fourth-ranked Chico State squad made their mark, but they were not alone in etching memorable performances on the speedy loop around the Cal State San Bernardino campus. In fact, the top six finishers in the race broke the course record as San Francisco State’s John Lawson crossed in second to spoil any shot at a perfect Wildcat score of 15. Lawson clocked in at 24:12.7, just under three seconds behind King.

Cal State San Marcos followed Chico State in the team standings, with All-CCAA performances from Vahagn Isayan (8th), Steven Terris (13th) and Josh Litwiller (15th) to close with a score of 63. Third in the standings went to Cal Poly Pomona as UC San Diego edged out Stanislaus State for fourth.

Other Top 15 performers who were awarded All-CCAA honors include five more Chico State runners, Jhavahn Holston, Jack Johnson, Teddy Kassa, Daniel Harrigan-Coca and Zachary Chamberlain,  and UC San Diego’s Tim Corvese. Taking 21st on the day was Cal State East Bay’s Xavier Smith, the 2018 CCAA Freshman of the Year.

Now in its second season, the Championship Scholar Award went to Logan Phillips of Cal State Monterey Bay. Given to the student-athlete who holds the highest GPA of all the competitors at a CCAA Championships site, Phillips is a behavioral sciences major and sophomore for the Otters.

Next up, teams from the CCAA join fellow region competitors at the NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 17 at Amend Park in Billings, Mont. Teams and individuals will be vying for a place at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, held Dec. 1 in Pittsburgh as part of the DII Championships Festival.
