LA JOLLA, Calif. – The CCAA All-Conference Women’s Soccer Team and major award winners have been announced, in advance of the semifinal round of the 2018 CCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The 2018 CCAA champion UC San Diego Tritons take center stage in the All-CCAA awards, headlined by Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year Mary Reilly and Natalie Saddic. Reilly, a senior forward from Chula Vista stands as the lone woman in the league to reach double-digit goals scored with 12, and half of her strikes on the season have been game-winners.
Saddic is a familiar face to the individual honors, repeating as Defensive Player of the Year. The redshirt junior from San Diego is the first woman to earn the award on multiple occasions. The Triton duo is joined on the All-CCAA first team by senior midfielder Summer Bales who has dished out a conference-best eight assists on the year.
A new award in 2018, Goalkeeper of the Year goes to San Francisco State’s Nicki Rucki. The sophomore from Martinez has been strong in the net, helping the Gators to the tournament field for the first time since 2010 and playing hero in the team’s first-round shootout victory to advance to play the tournament hosts in La Jolla. The leading goal-scorer for San Francisco State, sophomore Tami Kwong joins Rucki on the All-CCAA first team.
The distinction of Newcomer of the Year belongs to Cal State San Bernardino’s Kelly Kevershan. The Tucson native and transfer from Peninsula College led the Coyotes offense with 15 points and a team-best six goals on the season.
Chico State’s Susanna Garcia stands as the first Wildcat woman to receive Freshman of the Year accolades. The forward from Brentwood is the leading point-getter for Chico State, scoring six of the team’s 20 goals this season. In her 18th season at the helm of the Wildcats, head coach Kim Sutton has Chico State in the CCAA semifinal round for the ninth time as she has collected her second conference Coach of the Year award.
In total, 10 schools are represented on the All-CCAA first and second teams. Along with individual honors for Garcia and Sutton, Chico State duo Sarah Emigh and Jamie Ikeda earned first-team selection. A pair of Sonoma State players also dot the first-team list as defender Riley West is one of three repeat performers and Miriam Bloom moves up from an honorable mention selection in 2017. Cal State LA’s Irma Pinzon enjoys her first all-conference nod and senior forward for Humboldt State Alex Jenkins rounds out the 11-woman first team.
Interestingly, with four sophomores selected to the All-CCAA first team (Emigh, Kwong, Pinzon, Rucki), this marks the youngest collection of all-conference honorees since 2009. All six individual awards as well as the All-CCAA selections were solely voted on by the CCAA’s 13 head coaches.
