UC San Diego's Brett Jones Nets CCAA Player of the Week

SAN RAMON, Calif. – After a weekend punctuated by an overtime game-winner, sophomore Brett Jones has been named CCAA Player of the Week for Oct. 14-21.

Jones, a forward from Mission Viejo, was in on two crucial goals as No. 24 UC San Diego produced a sweep in its final home weekend against top southern rivals.

On Friday evening against No. 9 Cal State LA, he assisted on the game's lone score in the 85th minute. The strike handed the Golden Eagles their first league defeat of the season, and first loss since Sept. 6.

On Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Tritons went down a man and immediately surrendered the tying goal in the 37th minute. UC San Diego kept the game knotted at one apiece until Jones found the winner at 98:37. He split two defenders into the penalty area on the left edge, and after his initial shot was blocked by a defender, poked home the rebound for the unassisted winner.

With the win, the Tritons completed its regular-season home schedule an unbeaten 11-0-1 as the team currently sits in the sixth and final spot of the 2018 CCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament field heading into the final weekend of the play.

UC San Diego closes the regular season on the road, taking on Stanislaus State Thursday at 4:30 p.m., before facing off with Chico State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
