CCAA Announces 2017 Men's Golf All-Conference Team
SAN RAMON – Cal State East Bay senior Adam Stone earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) top honor after being named the Conference’s Player of the Year Monday afternoon.
Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay led all teams in the voting, each placing three individuals on this year’s team. Otters’ Elis Svard and Matthew Hedges received First Team honors, while Callum Carlstrom earned honorable mention.
The Pioneers, who also led all program’s with three First Team selections, placed Stone, senior Chad Hall and senior Owen Hutchison. Chico State’s Kelley Sullivan and Colby Dean were named from the Wildcats’ squad, while Sonoma State’s Justin Shluker, Cal State San Bernardino’s Greg Robarge and Cal State San Marcos’ Braeden Koran rounded out the First Team. Seawolves’ Spencer Clapp received honorable mention.
Stone is the first from the CSUEB men’s golf program to earn Player of the Year honors. The 13th-ranked golfer compiled a 71.76 average this season and finished with five top-five finishes, including two wins this season at the WNMU Mustang Intercollegiate and the East-West Bay Area Invite.
Also claiming individual awards were Cal State Monterey Bay’s Elis Svard and Edward Hackett, who were voted the Freshman and the Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Svard has been stellar in his first collegiate season with the Otters, ranking second in the CCAA with a 72.82 stroke average Svard earned one win and six top 10 finishes. Hackett, a sophomore transfer from Alabama State, also contributed greatly to CSUMB’s successful season as he averaged 75.09 stokes per 18 holes and collected three top 10 victories this season.
Cal State East Bay head coach Alan Sue, in his 12 year at the helm of the Pioneers men’s golf program, earned his first CCAA Coach of the Year nod after leading his team to two tournament wins this season and seven top-five finishes this season.
