2017 All-CCAA Baseball Team Announced
STOCKTON – Two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Champion Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona placed a Conference-best eight players on the 2017 All-CCAA baseball team, it was announced and the Wildcats were awarde their Championship banner on Tuesday night at the Baseball pre-tournament banquet in Stockton.
UC San Diego placed six honorees on the First and Second teams combined, followed by Stanislaus State (4), Cal State Dominguez Hills (2), Cal State LA (2), Cal State Monterey Bay (2), Cal State San Marcos (1) and Cal State East Bay (1).
The No. 6-nationally ranked Wildcats also led all 12 squads with five First Team picks, including junior starting pitcher Casey Costello, junior starting pitcher Hunter Haworth, junior third baseman Cameron Santos, senior outfield Josh Falco and senior designated hitter Dillon Kelley. Chico State’s Cam Greenough, Andru Cardenas and Sonny Cortez were named to the Second Team, while six others earned honorable mention.
Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA both named two individuals to the First Team, while UC San Diego, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Marcos and Cal State East Bay each secured one spot onto First Team.
Santos was voted this year’s Player of the Year, while fellow Wildcat Costello was tabbed both the Newcomer of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Cal Poly Pomona’s Brennan McKenzie was named Freshman of the Year with Chico State’s Dave Taylor snagging the Coach of the Year award.
McKenzie had had an outstanding rookie season, hitting .318 in 46 games played. He totaled 48 hits and 37 RBI, while also ranking second on the Broncos’ squad with 12 doubles.
Santos hit .398 and led the CCAA with a .482 on-base percentage and ranks among the top four in five categories with 66 hits, 44 RBI, 28 walks, 23 stolen bases and five triples.
Costello finished regular-season play with a 12-0 record, including a 10-0 record against his Conference foes. The Orange Coast Community College transfer compiled a 2.43 ERA and a WHIP of 1.01, allowing just 17 earned runs and nine walks in 63 innings pitched.
Taylor earned his second CCAA Coach of the Year honor since taking over as the Wildcats’ head coach in 2007. Included in Taylor's fifth 40-win campaign with the Wildcats were his 500th career victory and 400th leading the Wildcats. The Wildcats' regular-season winning percentage was their best since 2002, and their conference mark was the program's best since the 1953 squad went 10-0 in Far Western Conference play.
