Broncos' Mark Huizar and Wildcats' Phill Bailey Earn CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week Honors

SAN RAMON – Cal Poly Pomona's Mark Huizar and Chico State's Phill Bailey were named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Apr. 10-16.


CCAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week

Huizar, a senior from La Puente, finished ninth and notched a provisional qualifying mark in the 5,000-meters at last weekend's Bryan Clay Invitational.

His time of 14:03.96 set a new school record, breaking the previous record of 14:04.3 set by former Broncos Stephane Franke in 1989.

CCAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week

Bailey posted the top score in Division II this year and an NCAA Championship Automatic qualifying mark of 7.630 in the Decathlon at Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays.

His biggest effort came in the long jump, with a leap of 7.57-meters Bailey finished just shy of an NCAA auto mark. The leap also placed him fifth nationally and fouth in the Chico State record books.

The senior from Yucaipa also recorded times in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meters that placed him atop the CCAA's best times this season. He clocked a blistering time of 47.99 in the 400-meters, which also rankes eighth all-time at Chico State. His time of 10.67 in the 100-meters is 10th fastest in Wildcats' history and second in the CCAA this season.

Bailey also set a personal record in the javelin.
