2016-17 All-CCAA Men’s Basketball Team Announced
SAN MARCOS — For the second-consecutive season, Chico State has placed a Conference-best five players on this California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball All-Conference team, it was announced at the 2016-17 Men’s and Women’s Basketball pre-tournament banquet on Thursday night.
Three Wildcats — senior guard Robert Duncan, junior forward Isaiah Ellis, and sophomore guard Jalen McFerren were named to the First Team, while Corey Silverstrom snagged Second Team honors and Jason Briggs earned Honorable Mention.
Cal State San Marcos and San Francisco State followed the Wildcats closely with four selections each. The Cougars named junior guard Ethan Alvano to First Team, while senior guard Coley Apsay and junior guard Warren Jackson earned First Team honors from the Gators’ squad. Four programs — Cal State Dominguez Hills, Humboldt State, Sonoma State, and CCAA Regular-Season Champion UC San Diego — named three individuals to the All-CCAA team, with two players from both Sonoma State and UC San Diego named to the First Team. Tritons’ senior Adam Klie and sophomore Chris Hansen were named along with Seawolves’ senior's Luke Cochran and Jimmy Golden.
Rounding out the eleven-man First Team was Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Justin Sadler.
Earning the Conference’s top honor was UC San Diego’s Adam Klie, named Player of the Year. Cal State San Marcos’ Ethan Alvano was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year, Cal Poly Pomona’s William Christmas earned Freshman of the Year and the Tritons’ Eric Olen was named Coach of the Year.
A guard from Anchorage, Alaska, Klie helped the Tritons claim their first-ever CCAA Regular-Season title with averages of 14 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a total of 23 steals.
A junior transfer from Eastern Michigan, Alvano was also recognized as one of the Conference’s top players after leading the CCAA in scoring (17.9) and assists (5.6), while also ranking second with 2.2 steals per game. Alvano concluded regular-season play with CCAA single-game highs of 36 points and 14 assists.
Christmas was a huge asset to the Broncos’ lineup, averaging 8.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 24 total steals during his rookie season.
Olen became the program’s first-ever head men’s basketball coach to earn the Conference’s Coach of the Year award after guiding his team to a school-best 17 CCAA victories en route the program’s first-ever Conference Title. Heading into postseason play, Olen now holds a stellar 78-35 overall record and a 57-27 record in CCAA play.
In addition to announcing the All-CCA men's basketball team, the Conference also recognized the Tritons on their Regular-Season Championship, awarding the team with a Championship banner, t-shirts and a team plaque.
