CCAA Announces Field for 2016-17 Men's Basketball Tournament
SAN RAMON – The 2016-17 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball season came to a close Saturday night with eight teams earning a bid to the Conference's postseason tournament.
This year's eight-team tournament field includes UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Sonoma State, Chico State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA and Humboldt State.
The format begins with first-round games to be played at the top four seeds' campus arenas on Tuesday, February 28. The four teams to come out of the first-round games will advance to the site of the semifinal and final rounds, The Sports Center which is located on the campus of Cal State San Marcos. The semifinals and Championship game are scheduled for March 3-4.
UCSD not only claimed the top seed with its record of 17-3, but also clinched the program's first-ever Conference Title since joining the CCAA in 2000. No. 2 San Francisco State (16-4), No. 3 Sonoma State (15-5), and No. 4 Chico State (15-5) will join the Tritons as hosts of the first-round games.
The Tritons will host No. 8 seed Humboldt State (7-13) as a result of Cal State San Bernardino's loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night. UCSD just faced HSU last Saturday, defeating the Jacks 88-67.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-9) secured the No. 5 seed and will travel to Chico State in the first round after edging the Coyotes in the season finale. The Wildcats defeated the Toros by narrow margin (77-70) in the two teams only meeting this season.
Cal Poly Pomona (10-10) will play as the No. 6 (9-11) seed and Cal State LA as the No. 7 seed. The Broncos will take on the Seawolves for the third time this season and the second time in four days. SSU and CPP are tied at 1-1 for the season. LA and SFSU have also faced eachother more recently, with their last meeting coming just a week ago. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 against the Gators this season.
