STOCKTON  — The CCAA Regular-Season Champion Lumberjacks named a Conference-high eight players to the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) All-Conference Softball Team, it was announced Friday morning at pre-Tournament banquet in Stockton.

Humboldt State senior pitcher Katie Obbema was named the Pitcher of the Year, while Hannah Holland earned Player of the Year honors. Joining Obbema and Holland in earning individual awards were UC San Diego’s Maddy Lewis and Chico State’s Cyrena Taylor who were selected by the league coaches as this season’s Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Head coach for the Jacks, Shelli Sarchett was tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Sonoma State placed seven total individuals on the All-CCAA team, while UC San Diego and Chico State each had six individuals named. Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino have five selections a piece, followed by Cal State East Bay (3), Stanislaus State (3), Cal State Dominguez Hills (2), Cal State San Marcos (1), and Stan Francisco State (1).

The Jacks and Wildcats led all squads with four First Team selections with Obbema, junior pitcher Madison Williams, junior second baseman Tiffany Hollingsworth, and sophomore outfielder Holland being named for HSU. Earning First Team honors from Chico State were senior catcher Brynn Lesovsky, junior first baseman Cyrena Taylor, senior outfielder Alli Cook, and senior designated player Desiree Gonzalez.

UCSD had two players — sophomore outfielder Kelsi Maday and freshman third baseman Lewis named to the First Team and rounding out the group was San Francisco State’s  Jennifer Lewis, Cal State East Bay’s Sierra Clark, Cal State San Bernardino’s Kaylee Gemmell, and Cal State Monterey Bay’s Bianca Noriega.

Obbema is the first pitcher for the Humboldt State program to earn top honors since 2008. She concludes her four-year Jacks career with another solid season, finishing regular-season play with a 20-2 record, which included 16 wins in Conference play. Overall, Obbema has compiled a 1.38 ERA in 152.1 innings pitched, allowing just 30 earned runs and 20 walks, while totaling 131 strikeouts.

Holland has been a huge threat to the Jacks opponents all year, leading her team in batting average

(.440), hits (70), runs (50), and walks (33). She also heads into tournament play as the new HSU single-season record holder for stolen bases and is just 20 shy of tying the CCAA record, swiping 62 bags on thus far this season.

In her rookie season, Lewis ranked top-five in the CCAA with a .367 average and 4 triples, while also totaling 47 hits, 23 runs, 11 doubles, 33 RBI, and 16 stolen bases.

Taylor was instrumental in helping the Wildcats to its highest finish in the CCAA standings since joining the Conference in 1998. The transfer from Odessa College hit .366 with 36 runs scored, 15 doubles, and 35 RBI. More impressive, Taylor was one of the toughest individuals to strike out, only being fanned five times in 142 at-bats.

Sarchett earns her first Coach of the Year nod since taking over the program in 2013. She guided the Lumberjacks to a program-best 32 wins in CCAA play and a stellar overall record of 45-3-1 en route to an improved coaching mark of 133-38-1.
