SAN RAMON – Chico State seniors Lee Gearhart and Alistair Docherty earned the California Collegiate Athletic Association's top honor after being named the Conference's Co-Players of the Year Wednesday afternoon.
For the second-straight season, Cal State Monterey Bay led all CCAA teams in the voting, placing a total of four individuals on this year's team. Robby Saloman and Carr Vernon earned First Team honors, while Ray Richards and Fredrik Jullum were named to the honorable mention.
Chico State topped all squads with three First Team selection -- Gearhart, Docherty, and senior Justin Wiles. Sonoma State's Brandon Lee and Justin Shluker were named from the Seawolves squad, while Cal State San Marcos' Dylan Healey, Cal State San Bernardino's Taylor Hood, and Cal State East Bay's Chad Hall rounded out the First Team. Pioneers' Adam Stone and Stanislaus' Jahaan Nargussi recieved honorable mention.
Gearhart has been placed on the short list of two individuals to earn the Conference's top award in three-consecutive seasons. He joins former Wildcat J.J. Jakovac, who was named the Player of the Year in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The Roseville product compiled a 71.62 stroke average and won a Conference-high three tournaments this year. Docherty, who ranks fifth nationally with a stroke average of 71.55 earned individual medalist honors once and had seven top-five finishes on the year.
Also claiming individual awards were Chico State's Matt Hutchins and Cal State East Bay's Chad Hall, who were voted the Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Hutchins wrapped up his rookie season with a 74.81 average, while Hall was instrumental in helping the Pioneers claim the program's first-ever CCAA title at last week's Conference Championships at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa. Hall heads into regional play with a 73.21 stroke average.
Chico State head coach, T.L. Brown, in his ninth year, snagged his first Coach of the Year nod since 2009 after leading the Division II-leading Wildcats to five tournament victories and 10 top-two team finshes this season.
