Chico State's Clayton Gelfand and Sonny Cortez Earn CCAA Pitcher & Player of the Week Honors
SAN RAMON – Chico State's Clayton Gelfand and Sonny Cortez were named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of Mar. 21-27.
CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
A junior right-hander from West Linn, Ore., Gelfand snagged improved to 5-2 on the season after Friday night's stellar outing left the No. 23 UC San Diego scoreless in the Wildcats' 7-0 series-opening victory.
Gelfand allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out eight Triton batters in eight innings of work. After allowing two hits in the first two innings he retired the next eight batters and the next nine of 10 after plunking two batters in the fifth inning.
Defensively, Gelfand was also a threat and after placing two batters on in the fifth UCSD attempted to move the runners over with a bunt, but instead popped it up. Gelfand made a diving catch on the first base line and then doubled off the runner at first to hold the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead.

CCAA Baseball Player of the Week
Cortez compiled three straight multi-hit games to propel the Wildcats to a three-game sweep of 23rd-ranked UC San Diego.
The junior from San Pedro hit .500 (6-for-12) on the weekend and boasted an on-base percentage of .600 as a result of two walks and one hit-by-pitch. Cortez also tallied four runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI.
UCSD could not keep the leadoff from reaching base in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as Cortez reached base four times. He went two-for-three at the plate with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
On defense the outfielder was flawless, making 13 total putouts with five in both the series opener and series finale.
