Cal Poly Pomona's Peter Bayer and UC San Diego's Jack Larsen Named CCAA Pitcher and Player of the Week

SAN RAMON – Cal Poly Pomona's Peter Bayer and UC San Diego's Jack Larsen were selected the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of Feb. 22-28.


CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Bayer earned his second pitcher of the week nod this season after helping the Broncos on two occasions during its 4-1 week, which included wins over Vanguard, Azusa Pacific, and CCAA-foe San Francisco State. 

The Parker, Colo. product pitched for 8.2 innings, averaging nearly two strikeouts an inning as he totaled 15 through the two appearances. He allowed just two earned runs on four hits and walked just three batters. 

Thursday against Azusa Pacific, Bayer fanned five of hit eight opponents faces as he came in for two innings of relief. Then on Saturday, against the Gators he pitched 6.2 innings of solid ball, allowing just one extra base hit and holding SF State hitters to .182 average.

CCAA Baseball Player of the Week

Larsen, a junior from Mission Viejo, led the No. 11 Tritons toa four-game sweep of it first CCAA series of the season over Cal State San Bernardino. 

Larsen hit a team-best .563 (9-for-16) with nine hits, 10 RBI, and 16 total bases. He slugged 1.000 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run.

He had three multiple-hit games, including three hits in Thursday's series opener and during the nighcap of Friday's doubleheader. In those two games combined he hit six for nine with one run scored, a triple, two doubles, and four RBI.

Defensively, the outfielder handled all nine defensive chances, including a liner to center to end a five-run Coyote fifth inning.
