CCAA Announces 2016 Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams

TURLOCK  — Regular-season California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Champion UC San Diego placed a Conference-high six players on the 2016 All-Conference teams to highlight Thursday night’s release o the CCAA annual postseason awards, which were presented at the men’s and women’s soccer pre-tournament banquet in Turlock.

This season’s First-Team and Second-Team were well balanced with 10 of 12 programs represented. Following the Tritons were Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State, with three selections each. Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State LA, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State San Marcos, and San Francisco State each named two players to this year’s teams, while Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State had one selection from their respective squads.

The Most Valuable Offensive player was awarded to Toros’ junior forward Joey Chica. Chica was among league players to record double-digit goals, leading the way with 12 goals on the season. He also led the Conference with 31 points (2.07 per game) and seven assists.

Tritons’ senior keeper Cameron McElfresh was tabbed the CCAA Most Defensive Player of the Year after allowing just nine goals on the season for a fourth-best .493 goals against average, nationally. Against the CCAA, McElfresh secured seven shutouts and allowed just seven goals. 

San Francisco State’s Richard Leon and Cal State LA’s Ihsan Kalkan earned the Conference’s Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards, respectively. Leon concluded his rookie season with a team leading seven goals, including four game winners, and one assist for a total of 15 points. Kalkan was instrumental in the Golden Eagles’ defensive efforts, which allowed less than one goal per game and ranked fifth in total shots allowed.

Earning the CCAA’s Coach of the Year award for the third time in his nine-year career with the Tritons was Jon Pascale. Pascale guided his team to a  program-best record of 14-2-2 since joining the UCSD staff in 2008 and to the program’s first-ever CCAA title.

Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego each named three players to the First Team with Broncos’ naming forward Sergi Monso, midfielder Eshel Chardon, and defender Nadeer Ghantous. Joining McElfresh on the First Team were fellow senior Tritons’  — midfielder Riley Harbour, and Kuba Waligorski. 

Also named were Cal State Dominguez Hills’ Chica and sophomore midfielder D’Morea Alewine, Chico State senior forward Omar Nuno, Sonoma State senior midfielder Armando Coronel, and LA’s Kalkan.
