2016 All-CCAA Women’s Volleyball Teams Announced
ONTARIO — North Division and South Division leaders — Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino — each placed a Conference-high four players on the 2016 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team, it was announced at Wednesday night’s pre-Championship banquet in Ontario.
Torey Thompson, a senior setter from Newport Beach, was named the 2016 Player of the Year and Setter of the Year after helping the Wildcats to a 21-6 overall record, including a 15-3 record in CCAA play. Thompson led the Conference in assists (1017) and assists per set (10.94), while also averaging 3.58 digs, 1.22 kills, and 1.7 points per set. In addition, she contributed 33 blocks and 26 service aces.
Thompson, a four time All-CCAA selection, earned the Setter of the Year award for the second time in three years. She was also named Freshman of the Year in 2013.
Wildcats joining Thompson on the First Team were junior outside hitter Olivia Mediano and freshman middle blocker Kim Wright. True freshman Camryn Rocha earned Second Team honors.
Earning First Team honors for the Coyotes were sophomore setter Jayann DeHoog, junior outside hitter Lauren Nicholson, and senior middle blocker Malika O’Brien.
Following Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino with three All-Conference selections were Cal State LA, Sonoma State and Stanislaus State. Cal State LA named two — JamieAnn Bero and Alma Serna — to the First Team, while Rachel Andrews and Blair Ehrlich were earned top honors for the Seawolves and Warriors, respectively. Rounding out the First Team was UC San Diego’s Meagan Wright.
Other players to snag individual awards were Cal State San Marcos’ Samantha Flores, who was tabbed the Libero of the Year, Cal State San Bernardino’s Hailey Jackson, who was named the Newcomer of the Year and Chico State’s Camryn Rocha, earning Freshman of the Year. Cody Hein was named the Coach of the Year for the second time in his 14 year career with the Wildcats’ program.
Flores led the Cougars defensive efforts, helping the team to a fourth place finish in the South Division standings with a total of 450 digs, 4.55 digs per set. She also ranked second on her team with 25 service aces.
Jackson, a sophomore middle blocker, led the CCAA with 105 blocks and 1.22 blocks per set, while also hitting .287 with averages of 2.13 kills and 2.98 points per set.
Rocha had an outstanding rookie season with the Wildcats, ranking among the top 10 in the CCAA with 3.0 kills per set and was second on her team with 279 kills and 3.47 points per set. She also collected 24 service aces and 37 blocks on the season.
Hein guided his team to the program’s most wins (21) since 2010 and the most CCAA wins (15) since 2006. Hein improves his Chico State record to 232-165 and his Division II record to 278-209.
