CSUMB’s Reinhardt Earns Top Honors in 2015 All-CCAA Softball Balloting

WALNUT CREEK — Humboldt State Conference-high eight players named to the 2015 All- California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball team, which was announced on Thursday morning at the 2014 Softball Championships banquet in Stockton, Calif.

Chico State and Sonoma State placed seven individuals on the All-CCAA team, while reigning two-time regular-season champion Cal State Monterey Bay and UC San Diego each had five players honored. Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, and Cal State Stanislaus all named four players, followed by Cal State San Bernardino (3) and San Francisco State (2).

The Otters led all programs with all five of their Conference selections — first baseman Madison Casto, third baseman Alissa Greenhaw, outfielder Annelids Lopez, designated player Bianca Noriega, and utility-pitcher Cori Reinhardt — earning First team honors. The Seawolves followed right behind with four First Team picks, including junior pitcher Amanda Llerena, senior outfielder Keeley Ray, senior utility player Ancia Purdy, and senior second baseman Holli Brown.

For the second-consecutive season, Reinhardt was tabbed the CCAA’s Most Valuable Player and this year has also snagged a share of the CCAA’s Most Valuable Pitcher award. The senior from Riverside shares the top pitching award with SSU’s Llerena, who became the third-straight player to earn back-to-back Most Valuable Pitcher of the Year honors.

Cal State East Bay’s Gabby Gonzalez was named the Newcomer of the Year and Haley Gilham of Chico State was named Freshman of the Year, while Cal State Monterey Bay’s Andrea Kenney was pegged this season’s Coach of the Year.

Reinhardt becomes the first-ever player to be snag the Pitcher and Player of the Year awards in a single season. From the circle, she is 27-2 and leads the Conference with 1.60 earned run average, allowing just 44 earned runs on 179 hits in 192.2 total innings of work. Reinhardt is also among the top five best Division II pitchers with her 27 complete-game victories. Reinhardt’s offensive totals include 64 hits, including 19 doubles, 51 RBI, and 26 walks.

Llerena has had another outstanding season with the Seawolves, helping Sonoma to 23 of its 38 overall wins and 16-of-22 CCAA victories. The junior from San Jose ranks first in numerous pitching categories including strikeouts (200), innings pitched (209.0), and opposing batting average (.219), shutouts (8), and saves (4).

A junior transfer from Sierra College, Gonzalez contributed greatly to the Pioneers lineup, finishing second on her team with an average of .360, slugging percentage of .561, and an on-base percentage of .418. In 155 plate appearances, Gonzalez totaled 50 hits, including eight doubles, a triple, and six home runs, 26 RBI, and 11 walks.

Gilham definitely made her mark in her rookie season with the Conference as she concluded regular-season play with 15 wins and two saves in 27 total appearances. With a second-best ERA of 1.90, Gilham allowed 38 runs on 123 hits, while fanning 74 of her opponents.

Kenney was another repeat winner after claiming her second-straight Coach of the Year plaque. The ten-year head coach guided the fifth-ranked Otters in matching the program’s regular-season win record with an overall record of 44-10, which included a 28-8 record in Conference play, en route to the program’s second-consecutive CCAA regular-season title.
