2015 All-CCAA Baseball Team Announced

WALNUT CREEK — Defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Champion UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay placed a CCAA-best 11 players on the 2015 All-Conference baseball team, it was announced Thursday morning at the Baseball Championship pre-tournament banquet in Stockton.

Also placing a significant amount of players on this years team was Conference Regular-Season Champion Cal Poly Pomona with eight honorees. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. each had six selections, followed by Cal State Stanislaus (5), Sonoma State (5), Cal State East Bay (4), Chico State (4), San Francisco State (4), and Cal State San Bernardino (2).

The Tritons also led all 12 squads with four First team picks, including junior starting pitcher Justin Donatella, senior second baseman Erik Lewis, sophomore outfielder Jack Larsen, and junior designated player Gradeigh Sanchez. UCSD’s Troy Cruz was named to the second team, while six others earned honorable mention.

Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A., and Cal State Monterey Bay all named three individuals to the First team. Cal State Dominguez Hills had two selections, while Cal State East Bay and Chico State also secured a spot on the First Team.

Toros’ Kamran Young was voted this year’s Most Valuable Player, while Triton ace Justin Donatello was tabbed the Most Valuable Pitcher. Pioneers Alex Vesia was named the Freshman of the Year, with Broncos’ Ryan Olson and Randy Betten respectively snagging the Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards.

Young led the Conference with a .393 average, as well as in on-base percentage (.519), and slugging percentage (.730). In 211 plate appearances he totaled 64 hits, which included nine doubles, two triples, and a CCAA-leading 14 home runs, 34 walks and 46 RBI.

Donatella is currently second in the nation with a WHIP of 0.77 and fifth among all Division II pitchers with his 0.86 ERA after allowing just seven earned runs on 44 hits and 12 walks. Donatella heads into post-season play with an 8-2 record and a CCAA-best 94 strikeouts. 

During his rookie season with the Pioneers Alex Vesia went 5-4 in his 12 starts and compiled and 2.18 ERA, allowing just 18 earned runs on 60 hits, walking just 22 batters and striking out 39.

A sophomore transfer from University of San Diego, Olson wrapped up the regular-season with a Conference-leading nine wins. In 65.1 total innings of work he offered just 11 earned runs on 42 hits for an ERA of 1.52, while also ranking fourth in the CCAA with 69 strikeouts.

Betten earned his first Coach of the Year nod after guiding CPP to its first CCAA Championship title since 1991. He coached the Broncos to stellar 36-14 record, including a 28-12 record in Conference play. In reaching post-season play for the third time in five years, Betten now holds an improved record of 161-96.
