2014 All-CCAA Baseball Team Announced

WALNUT CREEK – For the second-straight season Chico State placed a conference-high 11 players on the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s All-Conference baseball team, it was announced Thursday morning at the 2014 Baseball Championships banquet in Stockton, Calif.

Also placing a significant amount of players on this years team was Cal Poly Pomona with 10 selections, while UC San Diego, Cal State East Bay, and Cal State Dominguez Hills each had six selections.

The Wildcats led all 11 squads with six First team picks  – starting pitchers Nick Baker and Brad Lohse, as well as relief pitcher Luke Barker, catcher Peter Miller, third baseman Ruben Padilla, and shortstop Cody Slader. UC San Diego followed right behind with four First team picks – starting pitcher Justin Donatella, second baseman Erik Lewis, utility player Troy Cruz, and designated hitter Nick La Face.

CPP named two individuals to the first team, with Cal State East Bay, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A. Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Stanislaus, and Sonoma State all securing a spot on the First team.

Cal Poly Pomona’s David Armendariz was chosen the Most Valuable Player, while Chico State’s Nick Baker was tabbed the Most Valuable Pitcher. Broncos’ Steven Andrade was named the Freshman of the Year, with Wildcats’ Brad Lohse and head coach Dave Taylor snagging the  the Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year awards, respectively.

Armendariz led the conference with a .593 slugging percentage thanks to 9 home runs, 15 doubles, and   two triples. In conference play he totaled 22 runs, 43 hits, 12 doubles, 13 walks, 9 stolen bases and finished second among the CCAA leaders in home runs (5) and runs batted in (36).

Baker is currently second among all Division II pitchers with a WHIP of 0.81 after surrendering just nine walks and 66 hits in 92.1 innings pitched. Overall, he registered a 9-1 record with five complete games in his 13 starts this season.  During CCAA play, Baker finished 7-1 with an ERA of 1.76. In 71.2 innings, he allowed just 14 earned runs on 55 hits, walked seven, and struck out 46.

Lohse, as sophomore transfer from Shasta Community College,  finished the regular-season 8-0 in his 10 appearances for the Wildcats. In conference play, he pitched 60.1 innings with three complete games, while allowing 11 earned runs on 51 hits for an ERA of 1.64.

During his rookie season with the Broncos, Andrade averaged .270 with totals of 41 hits, 18 runs, 9 doubles, and 22 RBI.

Taylor earned his first Coach of the Year nod after guiding the Wildcats to records of 37-11 and 29-10 in CCAA play. In reaching his eighth-straight 30-win season, Taylor now holds an improved record of 303-141.
