2014 All-CCAA Women’s Volleyball Team Announced
WALNUT CREEK — Sonoma State, which claimed its first-ever California Collegiate Athletic Association title in program history placed a conference-high five players on this year’s All-Conference team, it was announced Wednesday.
Kelsey Hull, a senior outside hitter from Valley Springs, was named the 2014 Player of the Year after helping Sonoma State to an 20-6 overall record and its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Hull finished among the top five with 3.70 kills per set, 4.5 points per set and recorded a Conference-best 37 service aces (0.52 p/set).
Seawolves joining Hull on the First team were fellow outside hitters Caylie Seitz and Madelyn Densberger. Freshman setters Calan Seitz and Courtney Seda were named to the Second team and honorable mention, respectively.
Following Sonoma State with four All-Conference selections a piece were Cal State San Bernardino and Humboldt State. Like the Seawolves, the Coyotes named three — Tori May, Brenna McIntosh, and Alexandra Torline to the First team, while Nicole Bewley and Haley Biles earned First-team honors for the Lumberjacks.
Other players to snag individual awards were Chico State’s Torey Thompson, who was named Setter of the Year, Humboldt State’s Biles and Bewley, who were Libero of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively, and Cal State L.A.’s Kelsey Molnar, earning Freshman of the Year. Sonoma State head coach Bear Grassl was named the Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season.
Former Freshman of the Year, Thompson had another outstanding season, leading the CCAA with 1,100 total assists, 11.46 per set, while also averaging 3.01 digs in Conference play.
Biles and Bewley led the Humboldt State to its first winning season since 1997. Biles led all defensive specialists with 507 total digs and an average of 5.07 digs per set. Bewley, a middle blocker, averaged 2.86 points per set and hit .296, with totals of 223 kills, 79 total blocks, and 18 service aces in her first year with the Conference.
Molnar was just one of two freshman to earn all-CCAA honors. The Monrovia product ranked third in the Conference play with 10.40 assists per set and finished fifth with 28 service aces.
In his 13th year as Sonoma State’s head coach, Bear Grassl grabs his third CCAA Coach of the Year plaque, including last year’s Co-Coach of the Year honor, shared with Cal State San Bernardino head coach Kim Cherniss. Grassl guided his squad to an 18-4 CCAA record en route to the programs first-ever first-place finish. He has compiled an overall program record of 232-137 over the past 13 seasons.
