CCAA Announces 2015 Men's Soccer All-Conference Team
POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona placed a Conference-high nine players on the California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer team to highlight Thursday's release of the Conference's annual post-season awards, which took place at the 2015 Soccer pre-tournament banquet in Pomona.
2015 CCAA Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills and Stanislaus state trailed the Broncos by just one, each naming eight players to this year's team. Cal State LA totaled six selections.
The Broncos made up more than a third of the First team, with senior forward Christian Gonzalez Diaz, junior midfielder Mathew Perez, senior midfielder Alexander Turkson, and senior defender Justyn Peeples earning the honor. Stanislaus followed closely with three First team selections -- goalkeeper Russ Klabough along with fellow seniors Jose Ramirez and Gerardo Cazares.
Cal State Dominguez Hills named two to the First team, including midfielder Joey Chica and defender Tony Alfaro, while Chico State's Omar Nuno and San Francisco State's Max Talbert rounded out the 11-member team.
Earning the Most Valuable Offensive Player award for the second-straight season was Cal Poly Pomona's Christian Gonzalez Diaz. Diaz scored a Conference-best 11 goals on the season, five of which were scored in the final two contests of the season, and handing off four assists for a season total of 26 points.
Being named the Most Valuable Defensive Player was Cal State Dominguez Hills' defender Tony Alfaro. Alfaro led the Toros back line in allowing just 15 goals on the season, while also totaling five goals and one assist.
Chico State's Nuno is this year's Newcomer of the Year, while Pomona's Nadeer Ghantous was tabbed the Freshman of the Year. Nuno socred 10 goals and recorded three assists for the Wildcats, while Ghantous helped the Broncos defensively in allowing their opponents to just 13 goals, just eight of which were in CCAA contests.
Toros head coach Joe Flanagan was voted the 2015 Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his 21 year stint with the CSUDH men's program and the first time since 2005. Flanagan led his ninth-ranked squad to records of 14-2-2 and a Conference mark of 9-1-2 en route to improving his overall career record to 303-109-36.
