SANTA ROSA – The fifth-ranked Chico State men were near perfect as they captured the 2011 California Collegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa on Saturday.
Led by individual champion Adrian Sherrod, the Wildcats took 10 of the top 11 spots to post a convincing victory over second-place San Francisco State and record their 10th straight conference title.
Chico State finished with 16 points, while San Francisco State placed second with 67 points. UC San Diego (84) was third and followed by Humboldt State (109), Cal Poly Pomona (130), Cal State Stanislaus (170), Cal State Monterey Bay (204) and Cal State East Bay (245).
Sherrod became the fourth straight Wildcat, and seventh in the last nine years, to finish as CCAA individual champion after completing the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25:39.0 and edging out teammate Isaac Chavez (25:39.1) by the slimmest margin.
Freshman Johnny Sanchez, who garnered CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors, finished third with a time of 25:39.8 and was followed by teammate Joseph Rivera (25:43.5) and Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Carrell (25:48.9).
Sherrod was honored as Runner of the Year, Brandon Haugen of Cal Poly Pomona earned Freshman of the Year accolades and Chico State Head Coach Gary Towne was voted Coach of the Year.
