Chico State Wins 13th-Straight CCAA Championship Title

SAN BERNARDINO – Chico State has ruled the CCAA in men's cross country over the years and the Wildcats proved yet again their dominance in the 2014 CCAA Championships competed at Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday morning.

Led by champion Alex McGuirk, the Wildcats placed seven runners in the top 16 and ran away with the team title. They scored 29 points to outdistance Cal Poly Pomona for the team title by 17 points. San Francisco State placed third with 101, followed by UC San Diego (102), Cal State Stanislaus (122), Humboldt State (157), Cal State Monterey Bay (166) and Cal State East Bay (258).

McGuirk cruised through the 8,000-meter CSUSB campus course in 25 minutes, 13.8 seconds to distance runner-up Mark Huizar of Cal Poly Pomona by nearly three seconds. SFSU freshman Drew Feldman was third (25:24.7), Kyle Medina of Chico State fourth (25:30.0), and Francisco Gomez of Cal Poly Pomona fifth (25:32.4).

Cal Poly Pomona's John Dominguez was sixth (25:34.5), and three Wildcats -- Nick Grubiss, Barron Maizland and Nicholas Valenzuela placed seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Earning All-CCAA honors (top 15) were: 10. Tanner Collins (UC San Diego), 11. Aaron Mora (Chico State), 12. Logan Smith (San Francisco State), 13. Troy Stechman (Cal Poly Pomona), 14. Alex Villaescusa (Cal State Stanislaus) and 15. Benji Preciado (San Francisco State).

Earning the CCAA's Runner of the Year was McGuirk. The CCAA Newcomerof the Year was Gators' Drew Feldman and the CCAA's Freshman of the Year was 'Jacks Dustyn Salomon.

Chico State coach Gary Towne was named Conference Coach of the Year.
