He was a five-time CCAA Coach of the Year and was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1987. By 1990 he had amassed a record of 406-119 with NCAA Division II National Championship titles in 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1987. Upon his retirement in 1994, Torgeson was elected to the Cal State Northridge Athletics Hall of Fame and the NFCA Hall of Fame.
