She is the all-time winningest coach in the history of CCAA women’s basketball. During her 20 years of service, May guided Cal Poly Pomona to a 519-119 overall record and to three of the Conference’s five women’s basketball national titles in 1982, 1985, and 1986. May’s teams finished second nationally in 1983, 1987, 1989, and third in 1990. The campus gymnasium in which she coached 16 All-Americans and four Division II Players of the Year was renamed the Darlene May Gymnasium in January 1996.
