Cal State San Bernardino’s Daryl Ruiz has been voted the FloCollege/CCAA Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 3-9.
Ruiz helped the Coyotes put up 55 runs and take three of four games against Regis. The senior first baseman hit .455 with eight walks, three doubles, a home run, 11 RBI, and seven runs scored. He reached base in 13 of 21 plate appearances (.619 on-base percentage) and slugged 1.000.
By his standards, he started slow in the series opener with just two RBI and a walk, but he got hot over the next three games, and CSUSB won all three. In a 26-16 routing of the Rangers, Ruiz walked four times, scored four times, and drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double to get the scoring started in the first inning.
The Corona, Calif., native followed up in the nightcap by going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and five RBI. He again gave the Coyotes an early lead, this time with a three-run home in the first. In the series finale, he walked three times while going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Ruiz trails only his teammate Tyler Vanneste (15) for the top RBI spot on the CCAA leaderboard with 14. He has driven in a run in six of the seven games this season and in each of the last five. He leads the conference with 11 walks and is ninth with a .409 batting average.
