Stanislaus State’s Caleb Bertoncini shut-down a potent offense to earn this week’s designation as the CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, for the week of April 22-28.
Bertoncini threw a rare 9-inning complete game as the Warriors defeated first-place Cal State San Marcos, 5-1, in game one of a twinbill on Saturday. Bertoncini allowed one run on six hits and threw 106 pitches to improve his personal record to 2-0. The lone run came in the ninth inning.
While not dominating, without striking out a batter, Bertoncini was effective with 10 groundouts to allow two double plays turned by the Stan State defense. In the early innings, the senior right-hander from Madera, Calif., retired nine of 10 batters during a stretch from the second to fourth innings. He stranded a total of seven base-runners.
Impressively, Bertoncini limited the Cougars offense, which ranked second in the conference with a team batting average of .321. CSUSM leads the CCAA with 366 runs scored.
