Jeffrey Ray was tough to keep off the bases last weekend as the Chico State second baseman was voted the Baseball Player of the Week, for the week of March 21-27.
Ray reached base 15 times, including 13 plate appearances in a row, in the four-game set against Cal State San Marcos. The junior from Lompoc batted .636 with a 1.182 slugging percentage to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 series win.
Ray went 7-for-11 at the plate with five walks and was hit by a pitch three times in 20 plate appearances. He collected three doubles, a grand slam, drove in seven runs and scored seven times. Ray also stole two bases during the series.
After going 3-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt in Friday’s opener, Ray reached base all 10 times he was at the plate in Saturday’s twinbill.
After being hit twice and drawing a walk, he smoked a grand slam over the left field wall in the seventh inning. In the nightcap, Ray drew walks on four consecutive at bats, tying the Chico State record for the second time this season (March 18). In Sunday’s finale, he went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Defensively, the second baseman recorded eight putouts with 14 assists. He committed an error during Saturday’s game two.
