2013 All-CCAA Softball Team Announced

WALNUT CREEK — UC San Diego and Sonoma State each had a conference-high seven players named to the California Collegiate Athletic Association's (CCAA) All-Conference softball team that was announced on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, regular-season champion Humboldt State captured three individual awards as Chrissy Stalf was tabbed Most Valuable Player, Katie Obbema was named Freshman of the Year, and Frank Cheek was selected as the 2013 Coach of the Year.

Cal State Monterey Bay's Vanessa Avila captured the Newcomer of the Year award, while Sonoma State's Samantha Lipperd was named Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Humboldt State placed six individuals on the All-CCAA team, Cal State Dominguez Hills followed with four players, while Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State East Bay, and San Francisco State had two players honored.  Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino named one player each to this year's All-Conference team.

The 'Jacks led all teams with four first-team selections -- senior first baseman Chrissy Stalf, senior catcher Courtney Hiatt, sophomore outfielder Dani Randall and freshman pitcher Katie Obbema.

This year marks Stalf's second CCAA Most Valuable Player Award in her four-year career with Humboldt State, her first was as a sophomore in 2011.  She will head into this weekend's CCAA Tournament as the conference leader in slugging percentage (.874), on-base percentage (.539), runs (61), and total bases (146).  With 14 home runs in conference play and a nation best 24 home runs overall, Stalf has surpassed -- and continues to improve -- the previously set CCAA record of home runs in a season.

Lipperd has had another solid season for the Seawolves with a 21-9 overall record and 14 wins in conference play.  Overall, she compiled a 1.96 ERA with 200.1 innings pitched, while leading the conference with 211 strikeouts.

Vanessa Avila, a junior transfer from Santiago Canyon CC, was among the best on the Otters' roster, hitting .292 with 28 hits, 12 RBI and six walks during conference play.

Katie Obbema had an outstanding rookie campaign for HSU as she concluded the regular season 23-3 overall with 23 complete games.  She wraps up conference play with a perfect 18-0 record and the second-best ERA (1.55).  In CCAA games, she pitched a total of 117.2 innings and allowed just 26 earned runs and 18 walks, while striking out 53 hitters.

Cheek is in his 25th season with Humboldt State and guided the Lumberjacks to a 44-12 overall record, including a 31-5 conference mark.
