811 Student-Athletes Earn 2017-18 CCAA All-Academic Accolades
SAN RAMON, Calif. – A robust 810 individuals have earned CCAA All-Academic distinction for the 2017-18 scholastic year, headlined by 82 student-athletes from Chico State.
Introduced in the 2005-06 season, UC San Diego reigned supreme for the first 11 years of the award. Last year, Cal State San Marcos took the top spot, and yet again, the league leader has changed. Chico State’s tally of 82 student-athletes edged out the Cougars (81) and Tritons (78). The top trio is followed closely behind by a collection of four Bay Area schools: San Francisco State (73), Sonoma State (70), Cal State East Bay (70) and Cal State Monterey Bay (69).
Along with demonstrating their prowess in the classroom for the 2017-18 season, Chico State was also the
winner of the 2017-18 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner’s Cup, recognizing the Wildcats’ stellar season on the fields and courts of competition.
Seven schools recorded an increase in the number of individual award recipients, highlighted by the Wildcats’ jump of over 22 percent. Other double-digit movers are Cal State LA (up 25.9%), Cal State Monterey Bay (up 13.1%) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (up 10.6%). Overall increases were also seen at Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State with Sonoma State and UC San Diego’s tally standing pat from the 2016-17 year.
Undergraduate student-athletes who have competed in a Conference-sponsored sport and earned a varsity letter during the academic year while earning a 3.40 grade-point average or higher during the designated academic year are eligible for consideration for the annual All-Academic Award.
The CCAA and NCAA Division II supports the educational mission of college athletics by fostering a balanced and inclusive approach in which student-athletes learn and develop through their desired academic pursuits, in civic engagement with their communities and in athletics competition, creating a life in the balance.
This present demonstration of the academic achievements of each of the CCAA’s 13 conference constituents illustrates just one way student-athletes in the conference take advantage of the unique opportunity Division II provides to compete in the classroom, on the field, in their career, for their causes, and on their terms.
