UC San Diego's Samilo Earns CCAA Player of the Week Sep 4, 2018 SAN RAMON, Calif. – After back-to-back game-winning goals, UC San Diego midfielder Maddy Samilo has been named the season’s first CCAA Player of the Week, for Aug. 27-Sept. 4. Hailing from Rancho Bernardo, the sophomore started each of No. 5 UC San Diego's first two matches on the right side of midfield, and tallied a pair of late game-winners to get the Tritons out to a perfect 2-0 start. On Thursday afternoon at Concordia Irvine, Samilo's first shot attempt of the year was the decider at 86:23 as UC San Diego overturned a 1-0 halftime deficit to notch a 2-1 victory. In Saturday's home opener against seventh-ranked Western Washington, she recorded the lone goal of the contest at the 84-minute mark, sprinting into the penalty area on Caitlin McCarthy's through pass, and putting an exquisite body fake on Viking goalie Natalie Dierickx before tapping into the open net. Samilo totaled four shots, with the two on goal, over 110 minutes for the opening week. The CCAA defending-champion Tritons play three non-conference matches on Oahu before opening conference play, taking on Hawaii Pacific today at 6 p.m., before sparring with Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo over the weekend.
