Softball Weekly Awards go to Julia Garcia and Alyssa Valinches

SAN RAMON, Calif. — Julia Garcia’s bat and Alyssa Valinches’ arm helped Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills to series wins over the weekend as the duo earned California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 27-March 4.

Julia Garcia, a senior infielder from Oxnard, had a big week in leading Cal State Monterey Bay to a 3-0 record against San Francisco State. The fourth game of the weekend was suspended due to darkness with the score set at 6-all.

In the three completed contests, Garcia hit safely in all three games, finishing 5-for-9 (.556) from the plate. Four of her five hits went for extra bases as she recorded two doubles and two home runs for the Otters. She totaled six RBI with a 1.444 slugging percentage over the weekend.

The Otters play four games at Chico State in their next series which is slated to start on Friday at 12 p.m.

CCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Senior pitcher Alyssa Valinches helped Cal State Dominguez Hills to a four-game series win on the road at Cal State East Bay. In her two starts, the Corona native went 2-0, pitching a full seven innings each time. She struck out a total of 18 batters and recorded a series ERA of 1.00.

Valinches threw a complete-game shutout and struck out 12 batters as the Toros won the first game by a score of 4-0. She threw another complete game in the final game of the series, giving up two runs and striking out six, to help the Toros prevail 8-2.

Next on the docket for the Toros is a weekend off, followed by a home series against San Francisco State which starts March 16.
