SAN RAMON, Calif. — After opening the season with a 5-0 record and tournament title, Chico State’s Wendy Cardinali and Haley Gilham have been named California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player and Pitcher of the Week for Jan. 29 - Feb. 4.

CCAA Softball Player of the Week

Cardinali, a junior from Santa Clarita, Calif., took her first swings in a Wildcat uniform on Friday, homering in her first career at-bat and racking up four RBI in the win over Eastern New Mexico. The game was one of three multi-hit games logged over the weekend in the Desert Stinger Classic. She homered again Saturday in an 8-0 Wildcats win over Western Washington.

Cardinali batted .500 (7-for-14) over the five games in the desert, delivering five extra-base hits, with eight runs scored and drove in seven while posting a 1.214 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base percentage. The infielder was named the Desert Stinger Classic Most Valuable Player and earned an All-Tournament selection after her stellar performance.

CCAA competition is up next for the Wildcats, with a four-game series at San Bernardino, beginning on Friday at 12 p.m.

Gilham, a senior from Norco, Calif., won all three of her starts and came within a strike of throwing a no-hitter at the season-opening Desert Stinger Classic in Las Vegas en route to picking up CCAA weekly honors.

Gilham posted a 1.68 earned run average for the weekend, allowing just four runs on eight hits while striking out 11 in 16.2 innings or work. Friday against Academy of Art, Gilham held the Urban Knights hitless until giving up a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, settling for a one-hit shutout in the Wildcats' 4-0 victory. Gilham was a complete game winner Saturday against Azusa Pacific, and then finished the weekend with a win over Concordia (Oregon). It was Gilham's 59th career victory, tying Chico State's all-time wins record. Her productive weekend made Gilham a Desert Stinger All-Tournament selection.
