Chico State's Kyle Medina Earns National Athlete of the Week Honor
SAN RAMON, Calif. - Chico State senior
Kyle Medina has been selected as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Division II Athlete of the Week and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week of Sept. 11 through Sept. 18.
No Division II athlete has completed UC Riverside’s eight-kilometer agricultural Operations course faster than Medina did on Saturday.
The Ventura High School product set a new started for D-II athletes on the course by finishing in a blazing 23:58.3 while finishing second overall in the Division-I heavy field at Saturday’s UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational. Medina’s time is the 26th-fastest ever recorded on the course.
Medina’s effort led 4th-ranked Chico State to a second-place finish overall, behind only Southern Utah, which entered the race ranked No. 16 in Division I. The Wildcats return to action on Sept. 30 at the Capital Cross CHallenge in Sacramento.
